Security at CERN: we all play a role

To ensure the Laboratory remains the safe working environment it is, each one of us has a role to play

CERN is attractive in more ways than one, and stays as attractive as ever to thieves. So, to ensure the Laboratory remains the safe working environment it is, each one of us has a role to play.

CERN, through its Security Service, makes every effort to prevent thefts and to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice once they have been identified. But in most cases, we rely on information provided by you. If you see any unusual behaviour or if you are the victim of a theft, report it by submitting a ticket through the Service Portal, contacting the Service Desk, or calling the Access Control Centre (CSA - 78877/78/79).

Of course, there are also a few basic precautions that you should take to protect both your own and the Organization’s property: lock your door, don’t leave valuable items in your office or unattended, store equipment in a secure place, etc.

Thefts affecting non-CERN property: new guidelines

In order to unify CERN’s rules and procedures, the Enlarged Directorate has endorsed new guidelines relating to thefts on the CERN site affecting non-CERN property:

 - A victim of theft is obliged to declare it internally in line with the relevant provisions laid down in the notification “Compulsory declaration of the loss or theft of property and of serious events: New rules and reminder”. The loss or theft of an item of property must be declared via the Service Portal or the Service Desk (Meyrin site, Building 55, tel.: 77777, open on weekdays from 7.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m., service-desk@cern.ch).

- If the person decides to lodge a complaint with the Host State authorities, he/she must in any case declare it internally. CERN will not be involved in the submission of complaints to the Host State authorities.

- For declarations relating to the thefts of both CERN property and non-CERN property, the Security Service will apply the existing procedure for thefts of CERN property. This procedure already contains provisions for communicating with all the stakeholders.

- Investigations not conducted by the competent CERN services (Security, Internal Audit) are forbidden, including, in particular, video recordings and/or interviews. Investigations may be conducted by the Host States, subject to authorisation by the Director-General. Contractors are only allowed to install their own video cameras if explicitly authorised by CERN.
